Llandinam WI

JUNE 2017 / UPDATE ON MAY'S ACTIVITIES

May was an extremely busy month for our WI, the highlight being the Powys Montgomery WIs’ Spring Show which this year was held in Berriew Community Centre on Sat. 6th May.  After weeks of preparation – knitting, sewing, jam making, cooking, etc. – the day arrived, our entries were delivered and judged.  We then had a nail biting few hours until the Show opened to the public at 2.30pm to see how we’d done.  And, we’d done very well indeed.  All the entries from the various WIs in the area were of their usual high standard and Llandinam gained a 1st (Jan Jones) in the Staging & Display section and 3rd (Mandy Havard) for the Mini Display of Preserves and Cookery.  The theme for both these sections was ‘The Good Life’.  There was also a 3rd for Three Fruit Marmalade (Hilary Davies) and a 2nd (Mandy Havard) for Five Assorted Pastry Nibbles.

Llandinam came joint 2nd overall in the individual Produce Classes, which is a great achievement for a small WI.  WELL DONE TEAM!  Despite feeling quite exhausted and saying ‘Never Again’, we’ll surely be back again next year full of enthusiasm.

Pam Evans, President, received the glass trophy on behalf of Llandinam WI awarded for 1st place in the Staging & Display section.  (Apologies for her hands covering the trophy, but it is very nice!)

After the business part of our WI meeting on Thursday, 11th May, Dave Williams from the Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Service gave a talk, with slides, on the vital work they undertake.  They not only rescue people, and animals, from the mountains, but also help find missing people and were very involved with the search for April Jones.

Dave explained that the dogs used by the service are usually Collies and Alsations (Labradors tend to have health problems and Spaniels often go ‘loopy’ after half an hour).  Dave had bought some of the rescue equipment along but, unfortunately, time did not permit him to show us this.

On Friday, 12th May, two members joined the coach for the PMFWI shopping trip to Cheshire Oaks.  After a reviving cup of coffee (and visit to the loo) we embarked, purses at the ready, on a few hours of browsing the shops.  Our two then enjoyed a very pleasant lunch at Carluccio’s before setting off on another tour of the shops.  By the end of the afternoon we were all shopped out and ready for home.

On Sunday, 14th May, our President took part in the Cancer Research Race for Life in Aberystwyth.  She and a friend undertook the 10K walk and finished in a very respectable 1 hour 40 minutes.  A big thank you to everyone who sponsored her.
